i3 - purple may by rent0n86 i3 - purple may by rent0n86

A long time since my last shot...
Well, the reason is that I'm trying out tiling window managers and a bunch of cli apps instead of openbox and gtk programs.

Here you can see Arch Linux running the i3 window manager (the best tiling wm I've found so far), urxvt (urxvtd+urxvtc), htop, vim, mutt and vifm.
The bottom bar is conky piped into dzen2. Awesome.
Wallpaper is cold view by pho-m, who seems to have recently unsubscribed from deviantart...

I'm kinda liking all this tiling and cli experience and some tools like vim are incredibly powerful, but still I'm not totally sure I will find this environment more usable than my beloved openbox setup, in the end.

I'm especially proud of my mutt setup because it took me some time to set it up the way I wanted, but now is really nice.
I'm actually using the patched mutt-sidebar from the AUR because I really can't live without a sidebar on my email program.

I really would like to thank brisbin and jasonwryan from the Arch Linux Forums because I've stolen all sorts of configs from them, thank you guys!

All the configs should be available on my mercurial bitbucket repo.
Enjoy, and let me know what do you think of it or if you have any kind of suggestions.

Cheers,

Hey, first thank you for your OB-theme - this thing rocks. But, i'd like to integrate the icons used in this theme for my current conky. Do you have a source for them? Btw, the link to your bitbucket repo is broken here.

Thanks mate. ;)

The correct link for my repo is here: [link] but you won't find all configs for this screenshot as it's pretty old and I went back to openbox in the meanwhile.
Icons [link] are .xbm icons for dzen, you can't use them in pure conky. So you'll basically need to pipe conky's output into dzen and use the icons.

Hope this helps!

i just downloaded your conky config. Sadly it doesnt look at all like the one on your screen and gives a lot of error messages on startup.

Anything i need to consider?

Hi,
the conky config in my hg repo has changed a lot since this shot. ;)
I pasted the right config here: [link]
You have to pipe it to dzen, like this:
conky | dzen2 -p -ta r -x 300 -y 784 -fn -xos4-terminus-medium-r-*-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1 -fg "#999999" -bg "#000000"

Hope this helps! :D

Hi,

I've just started playing with i3 and so far your screenshot has been the best I've found, it's really awesome. I've looked in your dot files to see how you've done it and I've stolen a lot of ideas, but still I 'm unable to "combine" the workspaces with conky+dzen2 right now mine is like this ([link]) so I wonder if you can tell how you made that trick. Thanks a lot.

I hate to answer my own questions, It happens that I was using the -dock option in dzen2, but if I use -x and -y then I can "mix" it. Is that the way u did it too?

Dovrebbe essere spiegato qua: [link]
In pratica devi inserire nel .conkyrc: ^i(/path/to/icon.xbm)

Have you ever use other tiling window manager?
Like awesome, dwm, etc.
What's you mean the "best tiling wm"?
I'm just curious, and currently using awesome anyway.

:)

I've tried dwm, wmii and scrotwm and i3 seems to have the more natural tiling experience, at least for me.
I want to give scrotwm one more shot but I found it a bit buggy last time.
Never tried awesome (because I heard of frequent breakage in the config file) nor xmonad (because of its huge deps and haskell config file).

if you havent already, you should consider looking into Awesome (although they break their config with every update it seems) or WMFS (which i recently discovered and fell in love with)

I'm trying i3 lately and find its tiling very 'natural'.
I'm not very interested in awesome mainly beacuse of the reason you just mentioned, but maybe one day, when it will be more stable...;)
